Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri, Odisha

Jagannath temple is the heart attraction of Puri, Odisha.This is an most important hindu temple which is dedicated to lord Jagannath, a form of Vishnu and only hindus can enter into this temple.This temple is famous for the ratha yatra (when three principal deities are pulled on huge and elaborately decorated temple cars) and many astonishing facts about this temple & till now which are unsolved.

This temple is constructed by the king Chodaganga but finally it is completed by Anangabhima Deva in 1174AD and it covers an area near about 37000m^2 and the height of the wall is 6.1m which is known as Meghanada Pacheri.The main portion of this temple is surrounded by a wall known as Kurma Bheda.

The main temple is comprised with 4 parts-

Deula, Vimana or Garba griha where the triad deities are lodged on the ratnavedi (Throne of Pearls).
Mukhashala (frontal porch)
Nata mandir (which is also known as the Jagamohan- audience hall/dancing hall) and
Bhoga Mandapa (offerings hall).

Neela Chakra

And a metal wheel is also present at the top of the Jagannath temple, known as Neela Chakra (which is made of 8 metals comprising of iron, copper, mercury, zinc, silver, lead, brass & gold). It symbolizes protection by Shri Jagannath and this is the only physical object whose markings are used as sacrament and concidered sared in Jagannath worship. And as per custom, everyday a different flag is waved on the Neela Chakra and the flag hoisted on the Neela Chakra is called the Patita Pavana.

UNSOLVED FACTS OF THIS JAGANNATH TEMPLE

We everybody know that when the sunlight glows one part of the subject it leaves shadow on the other but this Jagannath temple is reported to have no shadow of any object from any directions.So it is known that a light with no darkness.

It is believed that nothing is above the god, nothing fly above it either because this temple area is totally restricted area for fly the birds even an aeroplane could not be seen over the temple.

This is most important riddle, when you enter the first step inside the temple from Singha Dwara entrance you can't hear the roar of the water of sea, it is totally lost here.But when you returns from the temple you again hear the sound of the seawaves.This phenomenon is more prominent in the evening.It is local lore- it was the will of the Subhdra Mayi, the sister of the 2 lords who wished for serenity within the temple gates.Hence her will was duly fulfilled.

Generally we know, any place on Earth, on daytime the breeze from sea comes to the land and the opposite happens in the evening.But in Puri, you can find the reverse gear of the breeze i.e in daytime the breeze blows from the land to the sea and the opposite happens in the evening.

The riddle of Sudarshan Chakra i.e from every direction you can see this chakra and it looks back with the same appearance.

Magical methods for cook the prasadam and this is the traditional way to cook by the prists here.Exactly 7 pots are used as vessels mounted over one another and are cooked using firewood and it is very interesting that- the top most pot is cooked first and then the rest follows the same order.It is also known as the largest kitchen in the world.

According to Hindu mythology, wasting food is considered a bad sign but here the food is never futile. A total number of people visiting this temple varies between 2000 to 200000 people everyday. But the prasadam prepared everyday is never wasted, not even a bite!

Ratha Yatra

Puri recieves thousands of people who come to pay their offerings to lord Jagannath during the Ratha yatra and it is an annual parade in which the deities are carried outside the temple on 2 set of chariots and the idols are boarded in 3 boats to cross the river.

Puri is a very beautiful & famous city located on the coast of Bay of Bengal which is one of the most favourites among the people of West Bengal for short holiday trip. .

VISITING TIME

Winter time-The best time to visit Puri is between October & February.

Monsoon time- between June & September is not the ideal time for visit the Puri for heavy rainfall.Temperature ranges between 27-31 degree celsius.

Summer time- In summer, Puri are too difficult to tolerate, owing to the scorching heat the extreme humidity.Temperature ranges between 20-45 degree celsius.

HOW TO REACH

By road- Buses are available from Kolkata, Vishakhapatnam, Bhubaneshwar.

By train- Puri lies along the Calcutta-Chennai line and most of the trains stop here.

By flight- Puri does not has its own airbase, the nearest airport is Bhubaneshwar and is only at a distance of 68km. And Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI)- 49kms from Puri.

LOCAL TRANSPORT OF PURI

Transport systems are very good in Puri. Auto-rickshaws,motorbikes,cycle rickshaws are also available here but you have to know how to strike bargain and hired motorbikes come at the cost of 400-500 rupees per day.
